Days 21,22,23. 9.25-27.2013. 111 miles from Moab to Grand Junction (Corn Lake State Park) . 67 miles from Grand Junction to Montrose (BURNS HOUSE!). Day Off.

Wednesday.
We woke up knowing that we would have a good wind at our back so we hoped to get out early so that we could make it over 100 miles to Grand Junction, which would take out a huge chunk of miles that we needed to get to Montrose to stay with the Burn's by Thursday night. Our morning got switched around a bit though when I decided to swing through McDonalds quick for breakfast to save time instead of making oatmeal.

We got to MickeeD's at 8 am. And low and behold, our favorite person in Moab, Sharon, arrived at the same time and surprised us with her presence! She insisted to buy our breakfast, and we thought we should buy her breakfast, but she won the short battle. So we ended up hanging out at McDonald's rather than zipping out of town. How could we just leave Moab? We had some great conversation about The Lord and his works. But we really just cemented a new relationship with an amazing lady. I sure hope that we can stay in touch, and maybe we would visit if we ever found ourselves exploring in Connecticut. Not only did we reunite with Sharon at McDonalds, we also met the Davenports (Dave and Susan) from North Carolina. They offered us their home to stay at when we pass through NC, and they were solid believers as well. I really think that it will work out to stay with them because there house should be right on our route. It is just so great meeting Christian people across America. Moab was so great to us and we feel so blessed. It was tough to leave.

Let's try every flavor!

We finally got out of town, after a few more errands like Post Offices, and Clif Bar runs. It was 10:30 when we left. That didn't leave us much time to make it to Grand Junction. But God knew what he was doing with the morning fellowship and blessed us all day with a slight downhill route with only a few climbs and also a huge 20-30 mph tailwind. It was glorious riding. We ended up averaging around 17 mph for the day. I doubt we will do that again, other than possibly riding down Monarch pass in Colorado. So we rode 111 miles which became our new record, and the second time in three days that we went over the century mark. We only had about 65 miles left to Montrose for the next day. What a great day. We finished after dark at a state park looking for camping, but there was no camping there. What is it with state parks in the west not having camping? I don't get it. But it was too late to go anywhere else so we found a secluded spot on Corn Lake and set up camp for the night. It was one of my favorite spots and the lake was really nice.

The ride in the morning was fabulous though, as we rode on highway 128 right along the Colorado River. Sharon told us that it was a fabulous route, and she couldn't have been more right. Here are some pics.

The glorious bike path out of Moab.

Hello to the mighty Colorado

:) Downhill too. Such a great start to the day.

Thursday.
We woke up at 6:30 and left by 8 am. We knew it was going to be a windy day, and that the wind would most likely be in our faces so we wanted an early start before the wind got started. But the wind had already started. We had 67 HARD miles to go right into the teeth of a 20-30 mph wind. The opposite of yesterday. It was super slow going, we referred to is as slogging. We slogged all day until 5 PM when we finally made it to the Burn's house of refuge. We were very warmly greeted by Joey and Michelle, and then quickly sabotaged by the two 9 year old twins Landon, and Luke. We also met Braydon, Bryce, and Brittany, there other three kids. What a wonderful family! I'll tell you what though, there is never a dull moment. We played legos, where we built ships to hold eggs so they wouldn't break when we launched them off of the play set in the back yard. We played some super family involved intense games of checkers. And we just talked a lot and laughed a lot.

We had an amazing dinner, cooked up by Brittany (an aspiring chef) and her friend. It was steaks, ratatouille, and some incredible garlic bread, with creme broule (however you spell that) for dessert! Wow. What a blessing. There family is spoiling us rotten.

Friday.
After a great night of sleep we woke up to a true man's breakfast that Joey made for us. Eggs, cheese, sausage, hash-browns, all of huge proportions. What a great start to our day off. We still have a full off day to go, where who knows what might happen. We have two of the most energetic and rambunctious twins under our wings, and I expect something crazy. It is a restful, but also very fun and entertaining time.

I will update again with a few more pictures, including some of the Burn's fam.

God Bless,
Tailwinds (from west to east, not south to north)
Mark
